Our
Story

Founded in 2022, Lex Amica is a youth-led, duly registered membership organisation that serves as Africa's Centre for Constitutional Development. The name "Lex Amica," derived from Latin, translates to "friends of the law," and reflects our commitment to promote justice. In a continent where Constitutions are often violated, amended to favour those in power, and where the rule of law is seldom respected, we aim to change the status quo. Africa faces challenges of constitutionalism, with many citizens losing faith in their legal systems. At Lex Amica, we lead the African conversation to inspire hope and action for just and equitable societies.

We advance constitutionalism, good governance, and social justice in Africa through research, advocacy, activism, discourse, and education. We envision an Africa where constitutional principles are upheld, the rule of law is respected, and every person enjoys equality, democracy, freedom, and social justice. We foster a deep understanding of constitutional principles among Africans through educational initiatives and public engagement. By championing socio-economic and political reforms, we ensure that governance aligns with the ideals of unity, peace, equality, and progress. Through comparative constitutional studies and evidence-based research, we identify gaps in current African constitutional systems and propose impactful reforms.

Our civic education efforts empower African peoples by educating them about their constitutions, rights and responsibilities, enabling them to demand accountability and actively participate in governance. We also work towards creating durable African national Constitutions rooted in the principles of democracy and human rights. Additionally, we engage in strategic litigation to address systemic injustices and uphold the rule of law.

Lex Amica is dedicated to building a better future by reordering priorities within Africa's constitutional discourse. We place a premium on human rights, good governance, and the rule of law. Our work aims to restore faith in African Constitutionalism and emphasise its significance among all Africans, ensuring that their constitutions become living documents that serve the people, not just the powerful.
