Our
Story
Founded in 2022, Lex Amica is a youth-led, duly registered membership organisation that serves as Uganda's Centre for Constitutional Development. The name "Lex Amica," derived from Latin, translates to "friends of the law," and reflects our commitment to promote justice. In a nation where the Constitution is often violated, amended to favour those in power, and where the rule of law is seldom respected, we aim to change the status quo. Uganda faces challenges of constitutionalism, with many citizens losing faith in the legal system. At Lex Amica, we lead the national conversation to inspire hope and action for a just and equitable society.
We advance constitutionalism, good governance, and social justice in Uganda through research, advocacy, activism, discourse, and education. We envision a Uganda where constitutional principles are upheld, the rule of law is respected, and every citizen enjoys equality, democracy, freedom, and social justice. We foster a deep understanding of constitutional principles among Ugandans through educational initiatives and public engagement. By championing socio-economic and political reforms, we ensure that governance aligns with the ideals of unity, peace, equality, and progress. Through comparative constitutional studies and evidence-based research, we identify gaps in the current system and propose impactful reforms.

Our civic education efforts empower citizens by educating them about their rights and responsibilities, enabling them to demand accountability and actively participate in governance. We also work towards creating a durable national Constitution rooted in the principles of democracy and human rights. Additionally, we engage in strategic litigation to address systemic injustices and uphold the rule of law.

Lex Amica is dedicated to building a better future by reordering priorities within Uganda’s constitutional discourse. We place a premium on human rights, good governance, and the rule of law. Our work aims to restore faith in the Constitution and emphasise its significance among all Ugandans, ensuring that it becomes a living document that serves the people, not just the powerful.
